Facebook Messenger

It was only yesterday that we marked the 20th birthday of the SMS. For the last couple of years the SMS has been under attack by a number of different apps such as Whatsapp, Beejive, BBM and so on. Today another strong contender enters the battlefield.

Facebook today has announced that its messenger app for Android will no longer require a Facebook account to sign up. Instead, just like WhatsApp it will allow users to signup using just their phone number and name. Its that simple. This has been one of the reasons behind the success of WhatsApp and facebook plans to follow the same. They want the user to use this app not just for facebook but replace popular clients like WhatsApp and ofcourse SMS altogether.

The initial roll out will be in India, Australia, Indonesia, Venezuela, and South Africa with more countries and other platforms added in in coming days. Only time will tell when and how facebook messenger will compete against other popular clients but with an existing base of over a billion members, this isnt a service to be taken lightly.
