I have used a few robots in the past such as Robosapien series including the V2, Rovio, iSobot etc which have really never had any practical utility as such so I was hesitant in buying the Roomba 780 fearing that it might be the same.
Roomba 780 is an automated vacum cleaner which does the job pretty well. Now I have 2 small kids and 1 pug in the house. Between them my floors are in need of constant cleaning. My house floors are cleaned every day and vacuumed 3 times a week. Keeping this in view I really did not expect Roomba to find much dirt.
I have to admit, I was wrong. I sent Roomba out to clean the house and went on with my daily routine. After about an hour and a half or 2 hours I opened Roomba’s bin and was pretty impressed to find hair, dirt, small pieces of tissues and so on. Considering that my floors are always spotless, the performance of Roomba was great. What I really like about this is its ability to self clean and self dock/charge. Basically you can set up 7 different schedules i.e Set it up to clean your house on a Monday, Wednesday, Friday @ 4am (When everyone is sleeping) or any other time which seems convenient and Roomba will automatically do its job.
Roomba 780 also comes with 2 lighthouses. These are basically small units which you can put at the entrance of your rooms which Roomba would clean. Now these are useful for 2 things. First one being a barrier(Infra) so if you dont want Roomba to enter a certain room this will give it a signal to stop. The other and more useful feature is that it uses this light house to navigate thru different rooms. It would completely clean one room and only after its done would move to the next one. When the battery is about to die, it will again use these lighthouses to navigate itself from the other rooms back to the room where its dock is and come place itself on charge. The ability to charge itself and navigate throughout your house is what makes Roomba a great device.
Another great feature is the ‘Dirt Detect Series 2’ technology inside the 780. It uses an acoustic sensor which detect small and hard debris (such as sand) and an optical sensor to detect larger and soft debris (such as popcorn). Roomba also comes with a remote so if you have spill(Non liquid) you could control it from the comfort of your couch.
Roomba is extremely easy to setup. No programing required. Just press the start button and you are good to go. It cleans under the couch, bed, tables etc where a conventional vacuum cannot. Now this can never replace a human……at least right now but it definitely does a decent job at cleaning.
